[Rhodes22-list] Yamaha 8 hp motor source?

Mike,
I too was in the market for an outboard motor. I decided on a 9.9 Tohatsu with the understanding that Tahatsu manufacture motors for most of these other name brands.
The 8hp and the 9.9 hp are basically the same weight, so I went for the greater hp. After placing my order, I was told that they were out of stock for the moment, and that I could have a Nissan 9.9 for the same price as the Tohatsu, and that the engines are the same with different name plates. My Nissan has both electric start and the traditional pull start, which covers you should your battery die at an inconvenient time.
I keep my motor pointed straight and steer with my tiller, but I would like to have a linkage to steer with both motor and tiller. As has been said, it give even better maneuverability.
Good motor hunting.

Bill,
Actually I was trying to get Bill McCready's attention - apparently he
recently got or is getting a Yamaha 8. But, thanks for the encouraging
report on 8 hp being "enough". We do make it to Toledo now and again; my
Admiral's sister lives in Sylvania, NW of Toledo, darn near in Michigan
actually. I'll be sure to get in touch next time we're headed that way. I
also looked at the Tohatsu 8 and 9.9 outboards. They are quite a bit less
expensive even with the electric start, but the set up on the Yamaha 8 hp is
a strong selling point. Yamaha has the gearshift located right behind the
twist grip throttle on the tiller and Stan says the tiller is pretty long so
the controls fall easily to hand. I know what you mean about electric
start, but the Admiral really doesn't like pull start outboards. And I do
want her to be able to start it without me, just in case.
