[Rhodes22-list] Around the World Solo

I think a kid in a 36 footer is completely sane compared to the "Around in
Ten" concept. These people are really nuts, and the boats are low cost
enough that almost anybody with a garage and some tools can compete. The
designs look interesting, though. http://www.aroundinten.com/designers.htm

I don't know.

Solo sailing around the world is dumb no matter what your age. Why do
we encourage this kind of nonsense.

When you are cruising does everybody go to sleep at the same time, put
the boat on auto-pilot, and dream they won't die while nobody is on watch?

Not on my boat!

This kid's parents set this up to make money. There is no excuse for
it, and no responsible parent would permit it, much less encourage it.

The kid doesn't know any better--can't blame him.

BTW -- whatever really happened to Steve Fossett? (Another nut in whom
we invested far too much treasure to glorify his ego. If we made these
people pay for their own rescues there would be a lot less of this stuff.)

Not grumpy this morning, I've just seen this story way too often, and
somebody in the sailing community has got to start saying "this is NOT
the thing to do, and NOT what we should encourage our children to do."
It almost always ends badly.
