Peter,
The 1984 was made by Stan, most likely in Brooklyn or maybe out on the
Island where Mike knew him. For that matter so were 82's and 83's. The
centerboard issues that Peter had are typical of all centerboard boats where
they were left in water and the water froze causing inside well
delamination. That is an issue for all such boats in the north where water
freezes and could include the Chesapeake. There are more than one member of
this forum who inherited this issue. And boats made by Stan in more recent
years can have this issue if left in freezing water.
As to the 1973, it will be standard mast with no modern features. I
disagree with Peter about looking at it. It will give you an idea of an
older boat and how it held up. I agree with Peter, that unless you want to
spend at least a year and maybe two or three rebuilding, not to buy such a
boat.
I have rebuilt a boat newer than my R22 so I can tell you the amount of
labor, knowledge, time, costs, etc. A project boat is for specific people
and not the faint of heart. Peter is right that at that time the boats were
made for Stan by contractors. Some contractors were good and some not so.
The fact that the boat lasted, I would suggest that it was made by one of
the better contractors. So, if you want to spend a couple of years
rebuilding, then you might buy it.
Also there are some around that buy older boats that Stan will not touch,
clean them up and sell them. Their clean up is not the same as Stan's
recycle. During Stan's recycle many technical updates are often made where
economical and feasible. Often during a Stan recycle the boat is completely
gutted and all new interior and wiring installed. Usually, depending on
year, all new standing rigging. Usually new running rigging and sails.
There be a reason for recycles costing so much.
However, if you have a year or two to work on rebuilding a boat, go for it.
