The next step up in civilization was the old Sears Catalog itself. You had to drill a hole close to the binding near the top of the cover and pass a stout cord through it so the catalog could be suspended. from a nail in the side of the outhouse.  You tore off 1-2 pages of at a time as needed.
In medieval times, the nobility used the neck of a swan or a goose, and kitchen help were admonished to save them for this purpose.  Hence the verb "to goose" someone.
