Yes, what you experienced is static electricity. It wasn't caused by the
storms, but it is a natural phenomenon that has been discussed previously on
this forum many years ago. Your boat is basically a "plastic" boat. You have
plastic sails and metal thrown in for good measure. The sails are the most
likely culprit and the fiberglass and the rest of the boat are the storage
battery. The shock is even more noticeable when bare skin is involved, like a bare
belly hanging over a rail. That will really get your attention, even when
drunk.
