Ed,
We're looking for something to do with the equipment we've got, so is
everybody else, that is why the lot is full. Unlike many others,
we're almost debt free so we can "batten down the hatches" and wait
for better weather. I had a visit with one of our customers yesterday
who owns a lot of rental property (about half of his pre-Katrina
inventory). He started screaming into the phone when I told him the
story about our neighbor being bought out for Section 8 housing. He
can't get fair market value for what inventory he has left because
everyone is willing to wait until the cheaper 'gubment' housing comes
online. The Biloxi Sun Herald ran an article today stating that FEMA
has 32,000 RVs stored at a cost of 29 million dollars per year (not
the cost of the units, just the storage). They can't get rid of them
because some creative trial lawyers put together a class action suit
to sue the federal government for formaldehyde issues. FEMA can't
decide to auction them off or destroy them (they'll probably just
stall and nature will handle the issue for them). FEMA did refuse to
locate RVs in Galveston to avoid further lawsuits. The cost of the
Katrina RV housing program has been $230,000 per unit with the full
cycle costs BEFORE the lawsuits. That kind of dough would buy a
pretty nice house inland. Where were we? Oh yeah, until the Federal
Government runs out of money, there won't be any need for construction
equipment in our market unless you're one of the chosen ones lined-up
for a 'gubment'' tit. I suppose it may be time we learn how to
suckle.
Glad you had a safe trip, welcome back!
