Paint a mark on the extension bar, when it is in the right position, where
it comes out or goes in the sleeve at the front of the trailer.. You will
see the mark coming when you are pulling the bar and you can align the mark
with the corresponding end.
It is easier than looking for the hole.
Also, I found out that it is easier to unhitch, pull the bar out, and then
re-hitch, than trying to pull the bar with the vehicle.

Andrew,
Buy a cheap hand winch. Attach one end to the trailer and the other
to the frame of the tow vehicle. Let the extension bar out beyond the
pin hole and wench the two together. Ideally, you want the cable
lengths situated so that the wench is very near the pin hole location
so you can watch the progress single-handed, a very easy modification.
