What a nightmare.  The chopper can't really use the basket with a sailboat
in those seas because the mast is wiping around and the basket wire can
easily get caught in the rigging. Usually they have people go overboard and
pick them up in the basket from the open water. But that can be tricky at
night as the folks can disappear and be lost in the dark.  There are really
no good options. Looks like they were trying to use the raft to get away
from the rigging but the seas were just too rough. I had not seen the story.
