The foregoing link is to Frank Rich's column of yesterday (re McCain/Palin).
It is the most forwarded opinion piece in the paper and I hope it will serve
to balance the opinions expressed by "they who shall not be named" (see
Harry Potter) herein. It's also entertaining, which is, after all, the
object of this exercise.
Brad, I was delighted to get your kind concession that I am "not
necessarily" a marxist, just a dupe. This may be the beginning of a
beautiful friendship (see, Casablanca), but somehow I doubt it. I would like
to say that you are "not necessarily a flaming....... "well, you get the
idea.
Herb, your several references to the "teat" are causing me some concern for
you. Are there unresolved issues in your life that we need to discuss. I'm
here for you bro. .
On a serious note, I do believe Brad's concerns about Sen. Obama's
associations with various nefarious characters (both alive and apparently
dead) raise questions that should be dealt with. I don't know whether he
took any of the views of those people seriously. I do know that Barak
Obama, John McCain, and virtually any politician throughout history has been
exposed to and thought about all kinds of ideas. The fact that both McCain
and George W drank to excess in their youth and that McCain was a notorious
womanizer as a young man should not, in my opinion, disqualify him from the
Presidency. Do you know how hard it is for the son and grandson of Admirals
to finish at the bottom of his class at the Naval Academy? Young men do
imprudent things. I prefer to judge Sen. McCain by his views as held and
expressed today. So too with Sen Obama.I believe the quote is most often
attributed to Georges Clemenceau, that "any man who is not a socialist at
age 20 has no heart, and any man who is still a socialist at age 40 has no
head". I want to judge Sen Obama by his views as held and expressed today.
So, when Sen McCain says, as he did this weekend, that the Ledbetter case
was rightly decided by the Supreme Court it causes me grave concern. For
those still paying attention, Lilly Ledbetter worked for Goodyear as a
supervisor for many years. She was paid about half of what men were paid
for the same job. She did not know and could not have known about the
disparity because any employee who told other employees what they earned
would be fired. When she was sent an anonymous note appraising her of the
discrimination she promptly sued. A jury found in her favor but the Company
appealed and the Supreme Court said she sued too late even though there was
no way she could have sued sooner. McCain thinks that is fair. More
justices like that we do not need.
So, Fanny and Freddie are driven to rely on billions of taxpayer money, we
don't have the resources we need in Afghanistan, we throw resources down the
rathole of Halliburton and Iraq, We throw the tax burden on our
grandchildren because we sure aren't paying for it, the oilmen (Arabian,
Texan, and Alaskan) get richer, healthcare gets worse and coverage rarer and
more expensive, etc., etc.
I've got a great idea; let's put an Alaskan hockey mom a heartbeat from the
Presidency.
Cheers!
