[Rhodes22-list] Handling Gusts

Rummy's right, if you're experiencing heavy helm, it's almost a lock that
your rudder isn't as far forward as it should be.  Been there, done that.
Learned the answer from this list.  Now, I don't have to tug with much
effort at all, even in the worst winds.

As for chickens on board, I give them the main sheet to hold.  I tell them
that if they get nervous from the heeling, they can let yank it out of the
cleat and let it run.  I tell them it's called the "oh shit" line.  Having
the power to control it seems to give them some confidence.  I've never had
anyone yank it out, but I do get some repeat visitors who will ask, "Can you
pass me the oh shit line please?"

I just tell everyone to hang on..... we won't tip over & we can't sink.
That's the beauty of a Rhodes, you can push it past it's limit without
worry.

you should not have your wife on board when you do this.
