Elle,
Welcome to the real world of photography as opposed to picture taking
(before digital, it may have been the "reel" world, but that's a whole other
story.) The "P" position on the dial is for emergency or documentation
pics, shots that you could not have anticipated but needed to capture, truly
"point and shoot," nothing more. Partial auto ("S" or "A") is acceptable
when conditions vary quite a bit and you need to maintain particular
minimums such as shutter speed or depth of field. BTW, I prefer to manually
focus most of my shots; I am usually much better at knowing what I want in
focus.
I see you have also changed your "film speed" to ISO-400, a fairly good
compromise between noise and speed on the D80. With longer exposures, the
noise is less of a problem. I particularly appreciated the 1/13 sec
"partial blur" of the water in DSC_0149 - look at the focus you are able to
achieve at an effective F/29!
While I am not a fan of the pine tree camera movement images (I guess I am
more of a purist) I am very impressed that you used a 4s shutter in the
image. The color and composition is very interesting and brings to mind a
water fall more than a tree. Hmmm ... the more I look at it ... nah, you
can't convert me that easily :~)
Your tuition appears to have been well invested and worth every penny.
