Bill,

You said something about a canvas piece to prevent rubbing and wearing. 
Consider getting a piece of throw away garden hose about two foot long and
thread anchor line thru it.  Position it so that hose protects line and boat
and put knots in line to hold it so hose is always protecting line and boat. 
No more rubbing on boat, no more wearing out anchor line.  

I use this at the wear points for line and boat at marina dock.

This trick works if you try to add hose after everthing already set up by
splitting hose and pushing it in place to protect line and boat.
