[Rhodes22-list] anchoring - weight and size of mushroom ?

Bill et alia,

The mooring Carmen is on is a 300# mushroom put in by Capt. Justin, our
local marine contractor. The bottom is a mix of sand, gravel, rock and good
old mud. With swirling winds and your basic storms this mooring has proved
itself. Per prior posts the boat was knocked over and recovered itself
without any consequences greater than a couple of gallons of water in the
bilge.

The mushroom is a great permanent anchor when large and well set. There is
an old light ship, the 'Nantucket' in the harbor now, which used to guide
boats into Nantucket Harbor. It has the mother of all mushroom anchors on
the bow. In the summer of '06 when several boats dragged their mooring or
broke free, my mooring held, as did Bill's. Is yours a mushroom?

The small 10 + # mushrooms are good for 12-18' or thereabouts fishing boats
that just need a bit of an anchor while moving from spot to spot. A keelboat
does better with the other types of anchors that dig in and 'tell' you when
they are set.
