Yes, I do have to connect the chain to the anchor shackle every time. The
shackle is used to secure the anchor when hung from the bow pulpit, so
there's not much choice. Still for me, and I single hand about half the
time, that's easier prone on the bow over walking anchor and tackle
forward in rough seas.
I pull up some nasty muck, too, out of Lake Erie. I use a cowel vent
which can be put in the locker opening instead of the cap. It is strickly
a fair weather thing, but it dries the locker out in a day or two. My
main cabin de-humidifier and anti-stinker is a solar powered fan vent
mounted on the cabin top just in front of the pop top to port.
