[Rhodes22-list] in praise of Mt. Gay

Since beginning my southern forays (under the auspices of doing some reef work) I have stumbled on the holy grail of rhums,,,a brand called "Ron Zacapa". It is distilled in Guatemala, and aged 23 years. I have found it in the US. A bit pricey (about 40 a bottle here in S. Texas) it is the best I have ever laid my lips upon. I believe there is a law prohibiting mixing it with anything......

Yes, Appleton Estate is good. They've got a twice-as-expensive, aged
reserve that I understand is outstanding, but I haven't tried that one yet.

Ben,
You may recall, we (da list) used to ask new members to introduce
themselves by telling us where they sailed, what their experience was,
and what was their favorite rum. We had a "my favorite rum"
discussion
a couple of months ago. While Mt. Gay is good, I still prefer Appleton
Estate Rum (made in Jamaica). Give it a try sometime over ice (or
straight up which is my favorite). - rob

Lee,

I too learned of Mt. Gay on this list. I used to think that I didn't
like
rum, but come to find out, the shit I was trying (Bicardi, mostly)
isn't
real rum. Even the Puerto Ricans have another brand that they prefer.
I
occasionally buy another high-end brand, and when I do, I like to try a
side-by-side taste test. Mt. Gay hasn't lost yet.

I did have a really expensive rum whose name I don't remember at a good
restaurant in New Orleans, and that stuff might have been better. I
need to
go back and get the name of that one. It wasn't something I had ever
seen
at the liquor store.

No shame in mixing in a little coke. Mt. Gay is fine on the rocks, but
it's
hard to navigate back home when you're passed out in the cabin.
