[Rhodes22-list] ***POSSIBLE SPAM*** Re: Jim Johnston MastHoistQuestion

For years we motored with the mast to lashed to the bow pulpit and bottom of the mast deck plate lashed to the stern pulpit on the way to the trailer ramp, often under stormy conditions and under a low fixed bridge with no more than a foot of clearance. Secret was to go at about 1/2 knot and select a portion of the bridge which didn't have supporting struts to pass under. We've never lowered or set up mast on land.
On the water it helps to have 2 other helpers with you, particularly if your store roller reefing jib without detaching it from the mast head. Our mast was raised using the boom as a "gin pole" derrick to get a mechanical advantage as per Stan Sp's written directions and diagrams which came with the boat when new. No sweat then. when we were spryer and in our 60's and 70's.
Seems more complicated now as per your memo below.
But since '05 we seniors pay the marina where we inside winter store to do so. Even less complicated!!

Good Luck!!

I set my boat up at my slip, most of the time.Things I would be concerned
  about are-
1-boat wakes and waves at the set-up/tear down site on the water
the mast raising hoist lowers the mast onto the mast crutch, but the
bottom of the mast will most likely have to be taken off the mast step
and walked forward and lashed to the bow rail to make the top of the
mast lower and to move the boat under the bridge with a lower center of
gravity. The mast rests on a roller when it's on the crutch, and the
bundle only weights about 30-40 lbs.,but if a big wave comes along ,it
could get dicey if you dancing the mast forward to the bow rail just
  then.
  2-If you drop any parts overboard,and don't have a replacement,your done
sailing until you do get a replacement.
3-I've never motored with the bottom of the mast on the step and the top
of the mast on the crutch, might be a good question to ask the
group.I've motored 3 mi. with the mast on the bow rail and in the
crutch in 2 foot waves, without alarm.
