We use high tensile strength hard finish 1/4' AND IT HAS WORKED VERY WELL. Wife, the retired engineer has rigged double lines from pulpit stancions across furling line as latter rises to go around the drum. Keeps furling line from riding over the top of the drum and wrapping itself around the bottom of the jib tube.

I have the old CDI (circa 1987) jib furling unit and looking to replace the
  furling line.
What's the length of the JIB furling line? Somehow the original line has
gotten fatter and is jamming the CDI. The thickness looks like a 5/16ths and
  I think a 1/4" would work better.

  Best,
  Michael
