It is my understanding that both the US DOT and Underwriters
Laboratory (UL) enforce standards which will ensure that products sold
in the US use standardized fittings. Trying to mate up mismatched
connectors could be potentially disastrous, so everybody agrees to do
it one way for safety standards and avoid liability claims.
