I have the standard mast and keep my backstay tension fairly tight.
As David mentioned on the standard mast rig for the R22,
the backstay tension helps keep my furler tighter so I can sail
upwind easier. On a good day sometimes I can sail a bit less than
45 degrees upwind, but mostly Im quite satisfied with Miracles close
hauled performance with the furler kept very tight. I have a Harken
00, which is discontinued, (one piece foil) it came with a head stay
inside and a brass turnbuckle which is very tough to adjust on the
lower end. Thus the backstay helps take up a bit of the extra slack
on the rig.
