Frank:

I agree with Alan. The pop top enclosure provides privacy and expands the interior cabin space by enclosing a portion of the cabin top around the perimeter of the pop top area.  I use this extra space as a shelf when the pop top is up. Both the pop top and bimini work well together for extended camping comfort.  The bimini is also a nice feature during those hot sunny days on the Potomac and Chesapeake Bay.

Be sure to get the Pop Top snap on cover ; essentially it is like a waterproof tent with windows or screens. Good for privacy (with pop top up), rain and morning dew.  Best if Stan installs the screwed in "female" receivers for the snaps on the cover. We overnite camp as you plan to do and ours has lasted 25 Seasons and is just getting restiched. Would advise purchasing 2+ "Little Johns" with 1 female adaptor from West Marine; it's awkward getting to the Port-A-John at night with the double bunk set up. Good LucK!

  Dinghy: my wife and I take short overnights--20-30 miles downriver--to
  streams feeding into the Potomac.  We often stay in lovely little isolated
  anchorages (I will share the secrets for anyone interested).  On these trips
  we normally take a 20 lb. Boston Terrier.  Our usual procedure is to hop in
  the dinghy and go to shore so that Winston (the terrier, named after
  Churchill) can do his business before we go to bed.  Once we are anchored,
  we would like to stay anchored, so the dinghy (with electric motor) serves
  this purpose.  Admittedly, this is from earlier cruising experience, but we
  have been thinking of taking this same approach with the Rhodes.  Hence the
  dingy.

  This is my first post to the Rhodes list and Stan has suggested that I turn
  to the owner for advice.   I am buying a new Rhodes 22 from Stan (probably
  delivery in April, 2010) and have a number of questions about options.  I
  would appreciate any advice that other owners may offer.  A couple of
  questions, to begin with:

  a)       What engine should I buy-what size and what kind?  Note that the
  detachable throttle and gear shift that appear on the boat-show boat are no
  longer offered by the manufacturer.  I am particularly interested in getting
  an engine that is strong enough to easily reach hull speed while pulling a
  very small dinghy.  I am also concerned that the engine allow easy control
  when entering and leaving a marina.  Any suggestions appreciated.
  b)       What instruments do I need?  At this point I am planning to use my
  handheld Garmin Oregon 400C for charts and compass.  The one instrument that
  I really would like is a large-screen, fixed, depth sounder that I can put
  on the cabin and see from the stern of the cockpit.  I would like to have
  one that is "in-hull" mounted, rather than "through-hull."  If anyone has
  experience with the options, I would appreciate help.
