Rather than sliding mast car as on the mast, why not a substantial hook to catch and hold the bolt that is normally used to bolt the pop top on the fitting to the slider? 



You could just lift the aft end of the pop top then lift the forward end and hook the bolt.

Yeah, much as the R22 is a very versatile craft, I don't think she's ready to 
take on an M20K if flying's involved. 

I may do a PVC mock up for fun.  We'll see.  Stan's price for the mast stub 
makes doing too much engineering on this not cost effective.
