[Rhodes22-list] Transom Thickness

Dan ,
Depending on it's year of manufacture I would venture that the transom glass
is less than an inch in thickness. I have an 82 Rhodes. On a return
voyage, the waves on the Sound were exceedingly high and I both motored and sailed
to get through the Plum Gut and return to my marina in Southold. During that
voyage, the outboard motor bracket, attached to the stern broke free from
the less then one inch glass stern. It pulled the bolts, fibreglass, plywood
backing and fender washers out. Fortunately all damage was above the
waterline, and a safety cable on the outboard engine. Jury rig consisted of the
toping lift supporting the engine along with lines attached to cleats.
All glass was repaired, with a 1/2 plywood interior backing and a 1/4
aluminum plate covering the stern.
Before the repair, my 8 hp 2 stroke, outboard in full forward or reverse
would noticeably flex the transom area around the motor mount. That condition
no longer exists. I would be very cautious to add a four stroke engine of
even greater hp to the stern without reinforcement .

I am contemplating making a sculling oar for the Rhodes 22. Don't like
motors and mine wasn't particularly reliable last year; and I like rowing
anyway. Here is my question:
What is the measurement on the stern of the Rhodes? My boat is a couple of
hours away in its slip. I intend to make a bracket to clamp on to the
transom with an oarlock for use in keeping the sculling oar in place. How
thick is it? Seems like it should be somewhere between 2 and 3 inches, but
I obviously can't measure it. Anyone with their boat nearby who can chack
for me?
Thanks
Dan Johnson
