>From the factory you do not have a regulator for your solar panel(s). There 
 is a diode that is inline that prevents power from going the opposite 
direction  and discharging your battery(s) on cloudy days. That being said, I 
would  personally recommend purchasing an inexpensive charge controller and 
install it.  I'm speaking from personal experience only. A charge controller 
will extend the  life of your batteries preventing overcharging and boiling 
the water out.
