You want the high thrust, the "stock gear ratio" is meant for a planning
dingy. It gets the hp into the water, IIRC Yamaha make most of the parts
that are in the Mercury.

Thanks, everyone for the feedback.  I had an idea that 8 hp would be 
plenty.  Mary Lou, I remember the pictures of your setup.  I think we 
might try the power tiller since we've got to buy some control box of 
some sort anyhow.
The Tohatsu is interesting but they don't offer a high gear ratio like 
the Yamaha high thrust or the Mercury bigfoot.  Not sure it is needed 
though.  The old Yamaha 9.9 sure got good gas mileage.  Anybody had any 
experience with Mercury 4 strokes?
