[Rhodes22-list] A note about outboards and Re: Chesapeake sail

We did! As Lee and Tom mentioned we had a lovely sail on Lee's boat
At Ease out of his marina on Kent Island. Great beam reach both ways,
mostly flat seas. This was on Friday. Earlier that day we had a great
sail on Fretless tacking down from Rock Hall down toward Kent Island.
The beam reach on At Ease was nicer but the close-hauled run south
from Rock Hall was really really nice as well. Really enjoyed the
company. It was great to see Lee and Tom and Alice again and to meet
Lee's wife Andrea and his son. Great folks to spend some time with as
are most Rhodies.

Saturday, we left Lee to his yardwork and motored down to Kent
Narrows where we had a brisk ride with the tide under the opened
drawbridge. Once we got south of Kent Narrows we did some very fine
sailing in Eastern Bay before motoring up the Wye River to lovely
anchorage behind Drum Point. Eight other boats from our sailing club
attended and let me tell you nothing beats the upper bridge deck of a
Grand Banks trawler for Happy Hour with 21 people and it was great
that one of our members motored down in his 17 ft. Whaler and could
play water taxi as the forecast winds made it iffy to raft up. We did
note that with the Whaler in attendance, we are no longer the
smallest cruising boat in our sailing club!

The next day we motored to St. Michaels through some fierce powerboat
chop with a building wind on the nose. We could have sailed but it
was more relaxing to spend the afternoon on one of the upper decks of
the Maritime Museum waiting for the rest of the club to arrive.

This morning there was almost no wind and the forecast called for
afternoon thunderstorms with unsettled weather for the rest of the
week so we decided to head out early (7 am) for home. We motored 23
miles in 5 hours including 25 minutes spent milling around waiting
for the Kent Narrows drawbridge to open. One of the advantages to
leaving early is that there were not as many powerboat wakes as later
when everyone headed for home.

Outboard note: We did notice that compared to our old Honda, the
Yamaha 8 HT does a much better job of dealing with powerboat wakes
and rolly conditions. That big propeller did a great job of really
digging in where the Honda would cavitate.

All in all a nice cruise though we would have sailed more if we
didn't plan on meeting friends at a destination. Great sailing when we did!
