[Rhodes22-list] main sail outhaul

Hi Rhodies: I'm also a new owner of a 1990 (unamed as yet). Mary
Lou's article in some book on small boat sailing won me over. In our
case, I was only going to be able to keep my wife as crew if we had
an enclosed head, which is the case with our 1990. We sail in the
shallow protected waters of Orleans, Pleasant Bay, inside the
national sea shore on Cape Cod.
My first question is, when rigging the blue main sail outhaul, does
the traveller wheel orientation for and aft make a difference? And
does it sit free in the boom, or is intended to be attached to the
mainsail clew?

Hey Lee, do they have transient slips where you keep your boat?
We are toying with the idea of starting the weekend on Friday.

Mary Lou,
Stopped by the marina office last night prior to a wonderful evening
sail.
Plenty of transient and annual slips available (sign of the times).
Sunday
through Thursday the slips are $1.75/foot. Weekend and holidays they're
$2.00/foot. On the marina/pool/showers south side, there's a 35 foot
minimum. On the portapotties north side there's no minimum.
Depending on
your slip, it could be as much as a quarter mile walk to the marina
office,
which has snack foods and drinks.
There's an expensive 5-star (Leland rating) sushi restaurant just
outside
the marina gates with a much cheaper decent food bar/restaurant below
it.
Phone number is 410.643.5599. I talked to Jerri last night. I'm in
slip
2A, but if you describe my little red Rhodes everyone will know who I
am.
Betsy's the manager, Fred's the dockmaster, and Jim's the liveaboard who
works there. All nice folks.
Hope to see you and Fred this weekend!

Rummy,
Yeah, 220 feet is a challenge. I've got a small 16hp Yanmar tractor
that should be able to handle it. It's bigger than my riding mower but
still not big enough for any serious land disturbance. I rented a 60hp
tractor from a buddy of mine and regarded and dug out ditchlines a
couple of weeks ago. The powergrader might be what I need to maintain
it now. - rob

Rob,
Go to their web site and order the DVD. It will explain everything. I
found
I was looking for other driveways to do. The more I did it the
better I
became at it. 220 feet is quite a rise. It will take quite a few horses
to
drag the DR powergrader behind it. I found going uphill almost
impossible
with my John Deere X500. It's the smallest tractor they make, but it
suits my
needs perfectly.

Today was to be the day that Rum Runner gets her coat of paint.
Unfortunately mother nature didn't cooperate. With humidity levels in
the
mid 80's it
was not a good day to paint. Hopefully we will dry out and cool off a
little for a day or more so that the deed can be accomplished. I was
hoping to
be able to post a photo of the new hull, but you all will have to wait
a
little longer.
In case anyone on the list has a gravel driveway that's as long as mine
(600 feet) you might be interested to know that the DR Power Grater
really
works. I spent two hours today dragging the thing behind the John Deere
and
the driveway looks superb. A load of gravel to top it off and I'll be
good
for quite a while. I was reluctant to spend the money on it, but I
couldn't
find a single negative comment anywhere and now I know why. The darn
thing
works as advertised. Our driveway was a real nightmare before today.
Now
it's user friendly.
Rummy

Saturday morning I got up early, quietly dressed, made my lunch, grabbed
the dog, and slipped quietly into the garage.
I hooked up the boat up to the truck, and proceeded to back out into a
torrential downpour.
The wind was blowing 50 mph, so I pulled back into the garage, turned
on
the radio, and discovered that the weather would be bad all day.
I went back into the house, quietly undressed, and slipped back into
bed.
I cuddled up to my wife's back, now with a different anticipation, and
whispered, 'The weather out there is terrible.'
My loving wife of 10 years replied, 'Can you believe my stupid husband
is out sailing in that?'
And then the fight started .....

Rob,
I thought that you were into real work! I can sit around all day long
and
"regard" work to be performed, too.

Rob,
My John Deere X500 has a 16 horse engine (Yamaha air cooled) which has
enough horses, but the tires are small. Even with the differential
locked in I
can't go up hill and I'm not talking much of a grade either. The grader
works as advertised, but I can only go downhill. A four wheeler will
also do
the job if you happen to have one of those.

Rob,
Go to their web site and order the DVD. It will explain everything. I
found
I was looking for other driveways to do. The more I did it the better I
became at it. 220 feet is quite a rise. It will take quite a few
horses
to
drag the DR powergrader behind it.

In case anyone on the list has a gravel driveway that's as long as
mine
(600 feet) you might be interested to know that the DR Power Grater
really
works. I spent two hours today dragging the thing behind the John
Deere
and
the driveway looks superb.
Rummy
