Could also be a loose or broken cable from the throttle to the carb.; has happened to us with Johnsons and Evinrudes.

Out of the blue. But check to make sure that none of you fuel connectors are leaking (not gas but sucking in air). Even the slightest leak will cause severe starting and idle problems.

I have the bench manual and it was talking about the "throttle adjustment
knob" on the tiller. Well, mine isn't connected to anything and just spins.
That may have something to do with it.
