Mike,
Point taken. As a former pilot, I always perform a "preflight"  
inspection before sailing. Since the addition of the lock nut I have  
never found the mast bolt loose (it did loosen before the locknut).
Yea there is no guarantee of future performance and no substitute for  
a vigilent captain.
