[Rhodes22-list] Resolution on the duck thing.

Good question.

I sat around until late in the day Easter Sunday hoping they would go ahead
and hatch. Some of the other mama ducks were already leading their fuzzy
little chicks around, but no luck for me.

After the boat was loaded for our voyage, I disconnected our anchor, and
carefully moved the platic box, rode, and eggs to a spot on the dock. I had
built it a sun cover and tried to give it as much shelter as possible. Mama
duck was agitated, but she eventually settled in on her nest, and we headed
out.

Unfortunately, while we were gone, she abandoned the nest, depriving the
world of as many as five more mallards.

Karma has already come around with my punishment. I deprive a bird of
parenthood, and Russia cuts off adoptions to Americans. We were expecting
to go back this summer to take in another future crew member. We're hopeful
that it's just a delay.

(I was also blaming a lost dog on duck karma, but she managed to find her
way home :-) )

Ben

I haven't written up the account yet, but we went on a 90 mile cruise
through the Gulf ICW over a three-day Easter weekend. The weather gods
being the jokesters that they are, made sure to give us a respectful
helping
of wind and chop. We spent stretches of 2-3 hours each day motoring into
it
with 4hp. It didn't keep us moving at hull speed, but we made steady 5kts.

9 has always been popular on the list, but it's always seemed like overkill
to me.

I have a 4-hp Mariner and it works fine getting in/out of marina and back
across bay when winds fails. Would want something bigger for long distance
cruising.
