Rich,
I tow with a GMC sierra 1500 with a 4.8L V8. Stock truck no towing package
and it matches up quite well with the boat GVW on the trailer loaded is 3400
lbs. verified by certified truck scale. Last year I completely rebuilt my
single axle trailer to comply with Pa. law and got a reconstructed title for
my efforts. Rebuild included a new dexter axle, springs, and hydraulic disc
brakes. On the tow to the mine in the fall some simpleton pull out in front
of me when I was going down hill at 55+ mph. I have towed many vehicles over
the years (bobcats and such) and I firmly believe that without the brakes on
the trailer I would have wiped that guy out and probably gone to jail
(vehicular manslaughter) for having a trailer without proper brakes. Moral,
if your state requires brakes for a 3500 lb trailer then bite the bullet and
get them. Also note the newer rhodes are heaver that my boat and planning on
a 4000 lb GVW trailer would not be a bad idea. From your info the truck
sounds like it should do the job on the pulling end.
Drive safe and remember to keep the rubber side on the road
