I bought a new galvanized single-axle Triad from Stan with my '85 recycle in 2003. It came with surge brakes. The coupler has a hydraulic quick-disconnect on a short length of flexible hose at the tongue extension. You disconnect the hose to extend the tongue (brakes are not operational at that time).
I had a problem with the brass disconnect fitting this past spring. I stepped on it and broke it, and had some difficulty finding a replacement. Triad uses a different method now and they did not have parts.
The only other problem I have had is that, in saltwater use, the steel surge brake hubs only last a few years. I replaced both this past spring and also installed a hose to rinse the hubs from the inside with fresh water. We will see whether this extends their life at all.

BigAl,
How are your surge brakes plumbed? We were told that it was not possible to
add surge brakes on a trailer with a tongue extension. Is your trailer a
Triad?
