Actually after a little more thought if both batteries are charged
then it will appear as if it makes no difference. To test it,
disconnect the negative lead from one battery and then check the
switch positions. You should be able to confirm that each battery is
hooked up to a different side of the switch.

I always used one battery for starting and the other as a house
battery. This ensured that I didn't run them down too far to start the
engine.
