Thanks for the link. The winch on my motor lift is a Warn product, exactly the link you provided. The cable is replaced with a strap. This set up works great for me. The only trouble I have had is the wire connections from the up and down switch to the power unit that I need to replace with a more reliable set of connections. The manual clearly shows how to engage and disengage the winch using the knob on the side of the unit. I assume I would want to take any load off the winch prior to disengaging. Thanks for the info.

I recall somewhere along this discussion of the winch that it is a Warn Product? Something like this one with the cable replaced by a strap? You can get to the owner's manual on this page which describes how the knob works. - rob

The knob is located on the side of the winch. See photo enclosed. I
beleive that the knob keeps the winch engaged and that if I pull the knob
out it disengages the winch thereby letting it run free. I have not
released the winch using the knob and assume I would first need to remove
any load so that the engine doesn't run free crashing down on the motor
lift? I suppose I would rig a line to the motor to take off the load,
disengage the winch by pulling out the knob and then slowley lower the
motor/lift. I do have the manual for the winch around someplace but as I
recall it wasn't very informative beyond saying how to disengage the knob
and no details on the up/down switch wiring.
My R 2008 came with the winch installed by stan and I love it. I notice
that Frank's R2009 has a different style winch with a remote control. I
like having the manual switch.
