Joe,

Everyone's right on this one!  I did get a bilge pump installed on my boat but the bilge is so shallow that you need a low profile pump and for the pump to activate you need quite a lot of water in the bilge.  Basically, you need a leak - most typically around the CB trunk area.  Whenever it rains hard I get water in my bilge but have no idea where it comes from.  I have too may holes in my boat - all of them self imposed.  But the amount of water that comes in from rain is not a concern really because it can be sponged out.  The bilge pump just gives you peace of mind in case some kind of leak develops.  Look at it as future potential leak insurance.
