[Rhodes22-list] To bilge pump or not to bilge pump, that is the question.

Just chiming in, as an owner of a (much) less dry boat than yours. I just redid my electrics adding two bilge pump circuits and outflow paths. I have one in the lazarette and another aft the centerboard near its pendant. Having pumps is a cheap insurance against trouble. As for flotation; by the time your flotation is put to the test, the water has already compromised your electrical system and likely damaged many cosmetic and mechanical cabin items.
Keep Asking Questions,,

Rum Runner is an 88 model and has never had a bilge pump and I have never
found a need to install one. A couple of sponges full of water each year
(primarily from condensation during the winter months) isn't enough concern to
add one. That being said, I know that several owners have installed one on
their boat. You decide if you really need one. The R22 has positive
flotation, so sinking isn't a problem. If you do decide to install one, make sure
you use a check valve in the discharge line.

There are lots of ways water can get in your boat. If it doesn't come
with a bilge pump, tell Stan you want one with the 3-way switch: ON-
OFF-AUTO. The pump itself should have a check valve to prevent
cycling. The Rule-brand pumps have always been cheap and reliable.
As your boat ages, water will find its way in and it's better to get
it pumped out immediately (and automatically), rather than come out to
go sailing and find the floorboards awash. Think of it as cheap
insurance.
Cheers!
