[Rhodes22-list] Speed fix

Alan,
We call it the screamometer on our boat. I'm really a nice guy but I do
enjoy over-heeling just to watch the reaction. I still remember the
first time it happened to me. Crapometer comes to mind.

Jim,
I neglected to say that under conditions I mentioned below, best heel is
from 12-15 degrees for maximum speed, and hull flare seems to help
rather than hinder. Son-in-law (rail meat) refers to inclinometer as the
"vomitometer" because at 15 degrees heel he's ready to toss his cookies,
in spite of my caution about doing it into the wind!

Alan, Good information to log. I often sail sole which prevents rail
meat and limited use of our 175 head sail. My wife is aware of my
sailing skills and enjoys our boat ,"The Loon", best in the lift where
the cocktails don't tip. You did answer some of my concerns. I always
wondered if the Rhodes' flared hull had a negative affect on speed.
The
loose footed main does compromise sail shape that can be compensated
for with use of the traveler and a makeshift boom vang system. If I
can
keep the boom low, control the leece I can really see and feel a
difference in speed. Broad reach seems to be our best point of sail
compared with other boats. Both running and beating normally I see a
lot of stearns in front of me. I could use a good capt. from the U of
Penn sailing team. I know some individuals from the pen but neither
them nor their probation officer had any sailing skills. Jim J
