Cathy, the recycled Rhodes is the way to go if you're on a budget.  Our '92 recycled boat was like a brand new boat when we got it and it was half the cost of a new boat.  It easily sleeps three people, the amenities are great, lots of options, the inner-furling main is a great big-boat feature, and the motor lift is great if you want a power assist but even without the power version, it's still easy to put the motor up and down.  It's easy to sail, even for us relative newcomers to sailing and the fact that General Boats only makes this one boat means you have a manufacturer who is totally focused on this one boat, as opposed to seeing this as an entry level boat that they hope to graduate you out of in short order.  And this list is an invaluable resource for any question you might have.  All of these were the reasons I bought my R-22 and I have never ever second-guessed my decision.  I've only had that decision reinforced year after year by everyone on this list and Stan's involvement every step of the way.  How many other boat manufacturers make it so easy to talk directly to the guy in charge whenever you want.  Take a visit down to Edenton and see for yourself.  It is well worth your time and you can probably even pick out the boat that Stan will recycle for you (at least, that's how it worked when I went down there).  You can even stay for free at the factory in their "suite."  I couldn't recommend the boat more highly.

Cathy:  A great boat and a great recreational investment.  We had our first R22 
for over 11 years and recovered  90% of our initial outlay.  We did spend money 
keeping the boat in great shape.  Invested in new sails and replaced other gear 
as necessary.  We found the boat to more than meet our expectations.   Our two 
kids (near adults) when we picked up the boat and two of our grandchildren 
pretty much learned to sail on the R22.    Stan at General Boats will work with 
you on a re-cycled boat where you cannot go wrong.

We moved to a larger cruising boat for five years after retirement and are now 
back on an R22.  Having a ball sailing in shallow Florida waters.

We lost our Gulf Coast 23 to a marauding tree during Hurricane Ike and have
looked (fruitlessly) for a replacement since. Apparently the GC 23s weren't
well built and haven't held up through time. 

We haven't seen a Rhodes 22 in the flesh but it looks as though it has the
amenities we consider non-negotiable; enclosed head, shallow draft and
sleeping quarters for three small people.

We're on the Texas Gulf Coast and we sail bays and bayous. Think 2'-3' deep
water, miles wide. 

My husband is having sticker shock. Please tell me good things about the
Rhodes 22.
