[Rhodes22-list] Bottom Paint

Guys,

I have previously posted my experience on this, recommending that a professional should look at the bottom and determine if sealer was applied before the bottom paint. If not, have a professional shop apply adequate e2000 or equivalent, then multiple coats of the antifouling. I suspect many of our boats never had the sealer/barrier coat applied, just asking for a blistering problem, especially on the older boats. After the professional job is done, just reapply bottom paint yourself as necessary. Mary Jane was done in '07 by an expert for about $1500. I can attest to at least one factory job that chipped bottom paint easily with the edge of my fingerrnail. I have not had a problem, and I enjoy peace of mind that I will not.

On a new boat an unpainted hull is faster, no question, but are many of us into racing? I would put bottom paint on any new boat unless it is only dsy-sailed. If the boat is older, it has already been painted, probably should continue to be painted. In Florida the hull will begin to be coated with marine life in about a week. Do you really want to clean the bottom?

I enjoyed meeting three of our esteemed skippers on a DC trip a few weeks ago, thanks for the valuable time together!

This is just my experience, hopefully to your benefit.

>So if the boat already has bottom paint that has faded and scratched etc, what would be the appropriate action. I need new bottom ????? something, don't think I really want to sand down to raw fiberglass and even if I did, there would need to be something applied . The hull was painted several years ago. Speed is not the issue, not into racing and I will spend as much time on the water as the day allows......so what????

>> I was recently in Edenton looking at the current crop of recyclable R22s and discussing options with Stan. Since I'll be keeping my boat on a lift, I said that (in view of the recent list discussions of bottom paint) I wanted to be sure I got the appropriate paint. Stan suggested that if the boat will only be in the water for daysails, weekending and occasional one or two week cruises, I didn't need bottom paint at all--even in Florida. This was news to me, because all my boating has been with boats kept on moorings or at docks. Stan also said the boat will be faster without bottom paint. I mentioned this to a neighbor who was a blue-water sailor for years & very into racing: he agrees with Stan.
