Rummy said " Burning alcohol is a sin"
But it can also be entertaining and educational. One of my demo experiments
is to take a 5 gallon water cooler jug and put in about a teaspoon (8ml) of
methyl alcohol in the jug and shake it up. The alcohol vaporizes and the
jug looks empty. I do this before the kids come in and place a Styrofoam
cup upside down on the top. I announce my new burp energy converter
invention and get a kid to come up and burp in the jug. I claim that burps
have huge energy content. The skeptics want me to prove it. When I ask how
I can do it, the solution to most any question in 8th grade science is to
set it on fire. I make a small hole in the inverted cup and drop a match
in; the kids expect nothing will happen. Wrong! It goes off with a huge
roar, a 3 foot tongue of blue flame blasts out, and if I have the ratio
right, I usually knock out a ceiling tile. Oh yeah, the kids who are always
leaning back on two legs of their chairs, they fall over. Priceless.

Mike,
Burning alcohol is a sin.

Chris,
While the unit is protected again spills, it does get very hot! I am not
sure that you can locate it in a safe place while sailing. If you wanted
to
use it to heat the cabin when not sailing, be careful to provide enough
ventilation to remove byproducts of combustion such as CO and CO2. At
5200
BTU, you should be able to leave the pop-top and the door open and still
be
warm.
I found a manual for the heater at
http://www.swego.com/store/pc/catalog/heatmate%205200.pdf.
Rummy, do you have any experience burning alcohol?
