Bob--
Thanx for this encouraging info. I'm glad to hear how you handled the situation & would gladly read more.
I'll be keeping the R22 on my own boat lift and recently saw an article (which I haven't read yet) on making a boat on a lift secure. Even if I do that, I'll remove the mast/sails/rigging & anything not attached to the deck (of course). Yes, I'll have Stan's mast-raising set up.
Getting to a ramp & hauling the boat will take more lead time, but I'll take advice & haul if the situation looks bad enough. (There's a marina much closer than the nearest ramp & I guess I could take the expensive route & have them put boat on trailer. I bet there would be a line for such services.)
Though it hasn't happened to me, I know people (not boat owners) who've driven inland only to have a hurricane follow them. Wish I had a bigger garage, because I've got a door that makes the space a bank vault!
I'd sure rather be in FL in the summer than in DC. In a few years I'll live there year-round.
Thanks again,
P

Peter: Sailing in Florida during the summer is great. Requires watching for
the afternoon thunderstorms. Mornings often times lack wind.
Your trailer is your hurricane plan. We pulled when the Watch's indicated that
we were in the cone. I waited one year until the Warning. Mistake as dropping
the mast in the wind proved a challenge. I believe you have Stan's mast raising
and lowering system - a necessity in my opinion - especially when you want to
haul in a hurry. We would store the R22 on the trailer with the wheels chocked
and the trailer hitch tied to the ground. One year I also staked a few lines
around the boat but doubt that they would have done much. We went through a
couple of mild hurricanes during the thirteen years we owned our first Rhodes 22
with no damage. A few tree limbs and leaves in the boat buth no damage. Had
we gone through Andrew, I'm sure we would have had some major issues; however,
Francis, Jeanne and Wilma would not have been too bad.
Bob in Florida on the "NoKaOi 3" Stuart, FL - the other coast.

Caesar--
I'm sure I will.
I'm not able to pick up the boat until mid-September, and friends in
Florida--long-time and life-long Floridians--think I'm nuts to bring it down in
the middle of hurricane season. That's giving me pause.
Guess it will depend on how active the season turns out to be. Historically the
peak runs roughly 8/20-10/20, with 9/10 the bulls-eye. Also, BoatUS has a "Boat
Owner's Hurricane Worksheet" I need to complete.
A friend who's been sailing since he was about 3 sent me an agonized, cautionary
list of "everything" involved in owning a boat. I wrote back, "I thought that
was the point."
Let the fun begin!

Peter,
I think you are going to have a lot of fun.
I can still recall Stan explaining and demonstrating to me how to tack.
Yes. He is a good instructor; makes you want to learn over everything under his
tutelage.

Chris--
Thanks. In addition to my cell not working in Edenton, I left my laptop in DC.
How to install/wire the auto-tiller turned out to involve many circular
discussions. I was trying to follow Bill Wickman's setup, which is also the one
in a PS review of auto-tillers.
But I'm persuaded to install mine as Stan & Mark wanted to all along, using a
cantilever bracket that mounts to the cockpit wall/seatback. I assumed the
bracket would just be in the way when not using the auto-tiller, but it turns
out the bracket's in 2 parts and the bracket itself is removable. The cable to
the gps (and to an NMEA receiver if I were installing one) is wired directly to
the inside of the socket for the bracket. We're using your suggestion for the
power plug.
Despite the heat (103 degrees Friday) my 3rd trip to GB was great. Mostly I went
down to bring electronics
& confer on their installation. It was exciting to finally board my boat, even
if it is still inside the factory.
Also got out on Albemarle Sound for some sailing with Stan, who is--of course--a
laid-back & very good sailing instructor. Just as fine, finally met the
remarkable Rose--indeed, had a dinner of crab-stuffed flounder with the two of
them at a place called Waterman's.
I'd been on the R22 3 times before--with Lee, with you at Annapolis, & with Mac
McCready and Chris Geankoplis when Chris was in town a few weeks ago. I noticed
a pattern: I was always so delighted to be sailing again after a quarter
century, and the gear was so foreign to me (the most sophisticated thing I'd
ever used was a clam cleat!), that I was too blitzed by it all to absorb
anything about actually handling the R22. I think those were necessary
preliminary experiences and they certainly were fun, but I was beginning to
wonder if I'd ever feel competent on my own. Now I'm very eager to get my boat
launched in Apollo Beach.
Best

I had NTS electonics install mine at Herrington Harbor North in Deale Maryland
and I think they just followed the diagram to connect the wires. BTW I located
my plug for the tiller pillot just under the cockpit bench so it is out of the
way and out of the weather and they shortened the cord so I didn't have too much
hanging out.

This is Peter Klappert using Stan's Apple computer. I'm in Edenton and
we are trying to follow Bill Wickman's suggestions for connecting an
auto tiller to a Garmin GPS--in this case the Raymarine ST1000 to a
Garmin 541s.
Can it be done without the $100 Garmin starter kit sold by West Marine?
If possible could someone who has done this call Mark (252 339 0400) or
me or Stan (252 312 9485) at the R22 plant? (My cell doesn't work here.)
Soon?!
Thanks very much
P
