[Rhodes22-list] Aside from the hurricaine...

Ron,
I've almost the exact same set-up as Bill. I had Stan install a Hummingbird
fishfinder in the lazarette next to the cockpit drain, but I assume he used
expoxy instead of wax. I liked the Hummingbird because it was cheap like me
(about $120) and the bulkhead mounted display had huge numbers for the depth
and water temperature that could easily be seen from the helm.
It worked great for about four years and then it gradually began to have
problems. First the big numbers became inaccurate then the graphic display
quit showing detail. Now the graphic works to 6.5 feet but it's a black
screen above that depth--not really helpful. The transducer frequently sits
in water in the lazarette so that may have affected it.

I installed a fishfinder in lieu of a depthfinder because the cost was about
the same anyway. Instead of using a thru-hull, I bought one with the
transom type "puck" and instead of mounting it on the transom I put it in
the lazaret and mounted next to the cockpit drain hose using, of all things,
wax from toilet bowl wax ring. It has stayed put really well and provides
accurate readings and I get to see all the fish that are under the boat.
I have also heard about other Rhodies installing the puck using epoxy, but I
didn't want anything that permanent. I have also heard of some that
installed the puck sensor up front just in front of the bulkhead.

Do any of you-all Rhodies like to fish from your boat? And if so have you
put a fishfinder on your Rhodes? We are thinking of getting a fishfinder
chart plotter combination. Some of these have an "over the transom"
transponder - which seems like an interesting alternative to a thru-hull
mount. Has anyone used one of these - do you recommend them? Basically any
information on the topic of this equipment would be helpful for thinking
about fishing instead of hurricaines.
