As an English professor, I must comment:  Though German seems unbelievably 
complex, it is nothing compared to English with its long list of oddly applied 
rules (sometimes) and synonyms and homonyms and so much more that I refuse to 
learn it all... and I think, wisely.

Oddly enough (in the context of your message) English is a Germanic language; in 
fact it is the oldest of all the Germanic languages, even older that German. 
 (Tell that to the Kaiser.)  Naturally, English and German share lots of roots, 
but we English speakers were the first to bung up "the language" with to many 
(seemingly) useless ways to use it.  In that sense, it's good to be a down-home 
speaker. (Damn!)
