A wind indicator at the top of the mast is in clean air, which makes it the
most accurate. I have a VHF antenna which I have a windex mounted on the
whip. There are other ways to mount the windex, this one was the most
convenient for me. I haven't had the bird problems that Mary Lou has experienced,
but I do spray a healthy dose of WD-40 on it to repel the spiders.

I have simple fabric wind indicators, telltales, on my port and starboard
shrouds that help give a sense of the wind direction and I am wondering
what
others like to use. Does the davis instruments windex wind indicator
mounted on top of the mast work well and is this easy to install? I also
see that davis has "wind tell telltales" that are rigid plastic flags that
mount on the shrouds. Both of these would be a step up form the fabric or
yarn I hang on the shrouds and I am wondering what others find useful.
