A wind indicator at the top of the mast is in clean air, which makes it the 
 most accurate. I have a VHF antenna which I have a windex mounted on the 
whip.  There are other ways to mount the windex, this one was the most 
convenient for  me. I haven't had the bird problems that Mary Lou has experienced, 
but I do  spray a healthy dose of WD-40 on it to repel the spiders.

see that davis has "wind tell telltales" that are  rigid plastic flags that
mount on the shrouds.  Both of these would be  a step up form the fabric or
yarn I hang on the shrouds and I am wondering  what others find useful.
