[Rhodes22-list] Sailing from Orient Pt (NY) to N Myrtle Beach (SC)

I made the loop from Norfolk to Elizabeth City via the Dismal Swamp
Canal and back via the Virginia Cut in 2009. Great five day trip even if I
did spend most of the time motoring. The Rhodes with its shallow draft
really is a great costal cruiser that is easy to single-hand.
When you get to the Southern Chesapeake, Yorktown offers free overnight
docking at their town pier. Several restaurants in sight of the pier. An
historic walkable town and worth the stopover. During the summer on Friday
nights they offer live music by the docks.
Next real anchorage going South is Mill Creek between Fort Monroe and
the Hampton Bridge Tunnel. You can use the Fort Monroe Marina if you have a
military or govt ID. The near by town of Hampton is also an option. The
town dock, which charges a small fee is located right next to the Crown
Plaza Hotel and several restaurants.
Going up the Elizabeth River past Norfolk Naval Station there is a good
marina at mile marker 0 of the ICW on the Portsmouth side. There is a water
shuttle that will take you form Portsmouth to Norfolk for $1.50 each way.
Go in the summer and you can take the water shuttle to a minor league ball
game. Need to plan on hitting the bridges on the Elizabeth river between 9
and 3 as they do not open during rush hour. Once under the high rise bridge
you have a choice between the Dismal Swamp Canal and the Virginia Cut. The
Cut is quicker and deeper, but the canal is much more scenic with a 6 ft
depth in the center. The Canal has two locks; the Cut just one. There is a
small free public dock at the NC visitors center about 3/4 of the way thru
the Dismal Swamp Canal. From there it is an easy scenic run to the free
town dock in Elizabeth City. An added bonus of the Dismal Swamp canal is
the black slightly acidic water will kill just about anything growing on
your bottom.
