IMF works very well. It doesn't perform as well as a standard
battened mainsail - sail area and sailshape suffer - but the
convenience is wonderful. It's very adaptable to a wide range of conditions.
We've never had a problem with ours. It does take a bit of technique
for example if the boom is at the wrong angle it doesn't work as well
(not a problem if you've remembered to loosen the topping lift) but
once learned it works very well. If you are in high wind conditions
you may need to turn into the wind to depower it enough to furl it
though we've found that you can usually depower it enough furl it
just by releasing the outhaul. The only maintenance we give ours is
an occasional spray of SailKote . If we remember at the beginning of
the season, we'll also spray the edges of the mast slot to reduce
friction. We recently bought a new mainsail with the single vertical
batten from Stan and installed it ourselves. The first few times we
used it everything was stiffer than normal and we were wondering if
we had made a mistake on the installation but I think it was just the
new stiff sailcloth because it is now working just fine.
