Rummy;

For what it's worth, when I was in the navy we took our little oceangoing
minesweeper from Charleston down to the waters off Canaveral in '72 to sit
downrange under Apollo 16 with some sensitive instruments and techies who
were measuring "something???" as the rocket passed overhead. We were also a
potential rescue vessel in the event of a mishap shortly after launch. The
moonship was enormous
and we could feel the sonic boom. Very cool.

Thanks for the pics. A sailing reference for this thread could be that my
navy ship was designed by Philip Rhodes, MSO-440, USS Exploit. 171' with
wooden hull and 4 12-cylinder Packard Diesels for main propulsion. Twin,
variable pitch props with a max speed of about 17 kts (going with the wind
and sea).

Best,

BenC
S/V Susan Kay (designed by Philip Rhodes).
