[Rhodes22-list] Bottom Paint for Fresh Water

Good advice from John. The other thing to do is talk with folks around your lake marina to see what they use. In our lake in East Tennessee they tend to use either Trinadad SR, or Interlux VC17 (racers use this one because it is smooth). You will probably find that everyone uses something different. I have Trinidad SR that Stan used when I got my boat painted a few years ago. I probably need to redo, but have been too lazy and have very little lake scum on the hull even after all that time. The main difference between lakes and salt water is that salt water you are fighting marine growth such as barnacles and in lakes you are battling scum, or the green moss like algae crap. If you let it dry after pulling your boat, it is hell to get off. One more thing. If you have never had bottom paint, or if you are going to be stripping down to gel coat, be sure to put on a barrier coat.

Also, Practical Sailor as done some extensive testing of bottom paints in various locations but my take away is that the rankings seem to change every time they do a test.

Dan,

What to use is going to be dependent on what you currently have on the hull
and how you're going to use the boat in the new location. Will you be in the
water at a slip or trailer sailing? Have you pulled the boat out of the
water yet? If so how much bottom paint has built up over the how many years
of re coatings? Manufacturers have guides to show what is compatible with
various finishes.
