[Rhodes22-list] Furling Back Into the Mast

David,

"Two thoughts, the flapping causing the sail to furl in bunches and not wind
in nicely. In the future, have partner stand in the cockpit and use both
palms to steady the sail as it enters."

Face directly into the wind. Level the boom enough so the sail furls in
straight. Place the end of the boom just slightly starboard so the sail
furls in without too much rubbing against the mast slot. Provide tension on
the outhaul so the sail doesn't flap around so much.

Keeping the boat pointed into the wind; keeping the boom slightly to
starboard; keeping tension on the outhaul; smoothly furling the sail back
in; all work better with two or three people. I singlehandle and use both
hands, my head against the boom, and two feet (although one is just for
remaining erect). Yoga and a lack of pride helps.

My mainsail has never been removed from my mast (recycled 2004/2005) and has
shown no damage from furling. Never thought about it but the white sail
part in the mast slot has never faced south while docked.

Good luck!
