[Rhodes22-list] Sail balance and pointing.

Hi All:

Ok, I now have a few hours at the tiller in varying wind conditions.
Despite advice from Leland and others about how to balance the sails under
differing conditions, I still feel that I am not doing a good job of
sailing Sweet Baboo to her potential. Specifically:

1. I cannot seem to get rid of lee helm w/o substantial heeling (> 20
degrees). in winds > 10-12 mph (boom in lower slot - genoa at 115%, outer
track). Adjusting the fair leads makes little difference...
2. I sailed with Genoa at 100%,boom in lower slot, Genoa sheets in cabin
track (inside outer shroud) in winds of 15-20 mph and could not point
higher than ca. 60 degrees. I also had problems with getting blown way down
in these conditions...
3. Generally I find I can't point much higher than 70-75 degrees w/ sheets
in outer track and winds 8-10 mph.

So my question is - how high do experienced R22 sailors find they can
point the boat under various conditions. I am used to a previous boat that
would point to 45-50 degrees. With the R22 it is a bear to work upwind. I
am sure I must be missing something.

Thanks in advance,

Shawn Boles
