Yes, this is a small but deep chip. It's a bit ragged at the surface edge. Will it be enough to sand it into a smoother edge, so that the new fiberglass and the original gelcoat abut each other? Then sand the glass smooth and recoat it using a gelcoat repair kit? Or should I sand off a larger circle of gelcoat around the hole?

Paint however is a key part of upgrading and refurbishing. Two part LPU's
are used by stan on old R22's and are just the ticket for sprucing up
faded dull scratched gel-coat.
